Sanctuaries in Florida Still Picking Up Pieces After Hurricane Irma

Hurricane Irma passed through Florida on September 10, 2017, causing significant damage to many of sanctuaries certified by Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries (GFAS) in the state. Facilities caring for equines, primates, exotic cats and other species are looking for support to rebuild and remain a safe haven for the animals in their care.

No amount of planning and protocols could have protected the sanctuaries from the significant damage caused by this hurricane. There are 18 GFAS certified sanctuaries in Florida and many of them are still picking up the pieces left by the storm. We are asking people to help to rebuild and provide a safe haven for the equines, primates, exotic cats and other species that depend on them for care and safety.

GFAS was founded in 2007 to recognize true sanctuaries – in contrast to those that exploit animals for personal and commercial gain. Over the past decade, the organization has supported hundreds of sanctuaries worldwide striving to provide excellent and humane care to animals in need. As part of a 10-year anniversary celebration, GFAS has released a new look and new website to better serve their mission of improving the quality of care to animals in need of sanctuary.

GFAS now offers a new means to encourage giving to certified facilities. The Donation Jar is an online giving tool that utilizes a database of sanctuaries to searchable by groups of animals, location, or the types of opportunities each sanctuary provides. A donor can make a donation to help as many sanctuaries at one time as they choose in one transaction.

Consider making a donation to one, two, three… or all 18. GFAS now makes it possible and easy to do so in one simple transaction.
