Howey Horse Haven Rescue of Florida is Verified by Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries

(Howey in the Hills, FL) – The Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries (GFAS), the only globally recognized organization providing standards for identifying legitimate animal sanctuaries, awarded Verified status to Howey Horse Haven Rescue (HHHR) as of August 29, 2016.

Verification means that Howey Horse Haven meets the criteria of a true equine sanctuary/rescue and is providing humane and responsible care of the animals. To be awarded Verified status, an organization must meet GFAS’s rigorous and peer-reviewed animal care standards which are confirmed by a site visit and they must also adhere to a demanding set of ethical and operational principles. The verification status also provides a clear and trusted means for the public, donors and grantors to recognize Howey Horse Haven Rescue as an exceptional organization.

“We are proud to announce the recent verification of Howey Horse Haven Rescue,” said Daryl Tropea, GFAS Director of Accreditation. “Comprehensive equine care is of upmost importance to this organization as evidenced by the multiple services each horse receives to ensure their return to health. Howey Horse Haven is a “haven” providing a safe and healing environment for Florida’s horses in need.”

“Seeing the horses blossom is my favorite part,” said Teresa Meixner, President of Howey Horse Haven Rescue. “When I walk outside and they call to me. When I see them have the energy and will to run across the pasture for the first time. When the light comes into their eyes because they know they won’t be hungry and neglected anymore. That’s what pulls my heart strings. When I spend time with them and they put their head on my chest. I know they trust me, they put their life and heart in my hands and that is what I love about what I do, and that is why I am so proud to share in the fight against animal cruelty by becoming a part of the Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries.”

The GFAS Equine Accreditation Program is made possible by a generous grant from The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals® and the Kenneth Scott Charitable Trust.

About Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries
Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries (GFAS) is a 501(c) 3 nonprofit organization dedicated to the sole purpose of strengthening and supporting the work of animal sanctuaries, rescues, and rehabilitation centers worldwide. The goal of GFAS in working with and assisting these animal care facilities is to ensure they are supported, honored, recognized and rewarded for meeting important criteria in providing care to the animals in residence. GFAS was founded in 2007 by animal protection leaders from a number of different organizations in response to virtually unchecked and often hidden exploitation of animals for human entertainment and financial profit. The GFAS Board of Directors guides the organization’s work in a collaborative manner. While the board includes those in top leadership at Born Free USA, The Humane Society of the United States, International Fund for Animal Welfare, and American Anti-Vivisection Society, all board members serve as individuals dedicated to animal sanctuaries. localhost.

About Howey Horse Haven Rescue
Howey Horse Haven Rescue is not simply an organization; we are a family who doesn’t back down in the face of need. Need is what led to Howey Horse Haven’s creation, the need of desperate animals abandoned, neglected by their owners. Love is what makes our drive unwavering and powerful. Howey Horse Haven began the day Teresa Meixner, the proprietor, saw neglected miniature ponies. At the sight of them, she knew, “I have to do something, I have to be their voice and fight for them. We couldn’t stand by and do nothing or pray that someone does something.” For her, it is impossible to say no to need, especially when one has the ability to do something. To all of us at Howey Horse Haven Rescue, our work is rooted in our love of animals. From this, our work and commitment stems. We are all bonded, a true family who does not back down when confronted with human atrocity, but instead works every day to heal the wounds of the injured, love the scars of the neglected, and fill the lives of all who come to us with light and health. We are more than a rescue, we are a haven. For more information, visit or call 352-223-8761.
