International Orangutan Day

orang-utan-742636-mToday is International Orangutan Day! This is a day to promote awareness and understanding of the current orangutan crisis. There are two GFAS-accredited sanctuaries that you can support today: Center for Great Apes Yayasan IAR Indonesia Of course, there are many other ways you can help save the orangutans. Here are a few:

  1. Avoid Palm Oil Products– Most palm oil is produced in countries like Malaysia and Indonesia where our ape friends live.  Plantations are created in these countries in order to make palm oil, which means that land is being destroyed along with the orangutans.  Palm oil is an extremely popular product that is used in a lot of our foods and goods, allowing for continuous production, leaving the orangutans pretty close to extinction.  Download this Palm Oil Shopping guide to stay away from companies that use palm oil in their products.
  2. Sign or start a petition! – Your voice AND your signature can go a long way.  Although you may feel far away from the cause, you can still do a lot from wherever you are.  There are numerous petitions waiting to be signed that will help keep orangutans and their homes alive and well. Find or start a petition directed at officials in your state with the Palm Oil Consumer Action.
  3. Spread the word – Many people aren’t exactly aware of the dangers that orangutans are facing.  There’s just not enough awareness about the issue, and just by letting your family and friends know what’s really happening can help tremendously.  Like and share a post on one our GFAS-accredited orangutan sanctuaries on Facebook TODAY:
