GFAS actively seeks opportunities to highlight legitimate and outstanding sanctuaries around the globe, bringing animal sanctuaries to the attention of the general public, funders and the greater animal protection field. GFAS also educates on issues critical to sanctuaries such as the causes and conditions of displaced animals and the compelling need for sanctuaries.

GFAS exhibited at Taking Action For Animals, Arlington, VA. GFAS also presented a workshop entitled “The Animal Sanctuary: Start one. Support One.” The presenters included the GFAS Board President, Adam Roberts; Board member Liz Ross; Matt Smith from Project Perry and the GFAS executive director. Matt Smith served as a wonderful example of the wisdom of obtaining a business education before starting a sanctuary, as well as interning with another sanctuary for a year prior to opening his own. His mentor sanctuary, Foster Parrots, was present and recognized also.

GFAS Executive Director Patty Finch was a presenter on two panels for The Homes for Horses Coalition Third Annual Conference held in Las Vegas, Nevada. Patty, along with Board Director Liz Ross, also conducted an evening training session for potential GFAS volunteers.

Homes for Horses Conference, Nashville, TN. PattyFinch spoke to attendees about the GFAS accreditation process, and a panel of funders explained why GFAS accreditation is important to foundations.

GFAS offered an all-day training for volunteers interested in serving as GFAS equine site visitors. Speakers included Beth DeCaprio, Founder, and Micheal Russell, DVM, of the Grace Foundation of Northern California; Kim Haddad, DVM and GFAS Board Member; and Dave Pauli of HSUS, as well as GFAS executive director Patty Finch. A warm welcome was given by Keith Dane, Director of Equine Protection for HSUS.

Animal Care EXPO, Orlando, FL, Jeannine Alexander co-presented “Raising the standards for Animal Rescues and Sanctuaries with GFAS Accreditation” with Karen Pomroy, Executive Director and Founder of Equine Voices Rescue & Sanctuary. Jeannine highlighted the Top Ten Reasons to become Accredited or Verified and explained the steps of the process. Karen shared her experience with the application process and how becoming Accredited has benefited Equine Voices Rescue & Sanctuary.
